Mirchi Gang Leader Flees UP, Grows A Beard & Sells Fruits In Mumbai, Gets Nabbed

In what seems to be an episode straight out of a crime show, a notorious gangster from UP changed his appearance and started selling fruits in Mumbai to evade arrest. Ashu Jaat, kingpin of the Mirchi gang, is UP’s most wanted gangster and has over 40 cases of murder, kidnapping, loot, and theft against him, reports TOI.

Carrying a bounty of Rs 2.5 lakh, Jaat was arrested by a joint team of the Hapur police and Mumbai crime branch recently, reports Times Now. His name had first come to light in January when he allegedly murdered Gaurav Chandel, an executive from Noida. Initially, the police had arrested his wife Poonam along with his gang members.

However, they were unable to catch him as he had fled away. Fearing an encounter, the notorious criminal had grown a beard and started selling fruits in the Irla market in Mumbai. Eventually, when the accused called up an associate in the state, UP Police informed the crime branch in Mumbai. After the tip-off was received, two police officers posed as BMC officials and napped the accused.

Sunil Mane, crime branch inspector was quoted saying, “UP Police had sent us his old pictures, but he looks different now, with long hair and beard. So, it was difficult to identify him. Out team possed as BMC officials and got close to him. When we made sure he was the same accused, we took precautions and picked him up.”

According to the police, Ashu and his brother Bholu led a gang of more than 25 members and were wanted by Noida, Ghaziabad, and Hapur police. The gang had reportedly got its name ‘Mirchi’ for their modus operandi of throwing chili flakes into the eyes of people and robbing them. The gangster will now be sent to Hapur on transit remand.
