Microbiologist Wins Hearts By Making Magical ‘Game Of Thrones’ Sigils From Bacteria & Jelly!

One of the most popular shows of all time (a cult phenomenon really), Game of Thrones, is in its final season. We’re 5 episodes down and the grand finale is coming this Monday. Apart from the unpredictable storyline, awesome characters and LIT dragons, there’s something else that has been a constant favourite of the fandom. The sigils of all the great houses of the seven kingdoms, of course.

There are sigils representing the Starks, Targaryens, Lannisters, Greyjoys, Baratheons and more.

And a US-based microbiologist, Bria O’Brien, has taken her love for the show to the next level by recreating the sigils with bacteria in Petri dishes. How cool do these look?

The scientist shared her ‘Agar Art’ on a Reddit thread which quickly went viral. Vice.com reports that this artwork involves placing agar (jelly-like substance) in a petri dish and adding bacteria to it. After 1-2 days, the bacteria grow. Then, she explains,

“To draw them I use an inoculating needle and a drop of sterile water in a petri dish mixed with a colony of the bacteria.”

Here is a detailed tutorial of agar art.

Everyone was left impressed with Bria’s creativity and talented tribute to the show.

Bria is going to enter her work for the annual art contest held by The American Society for Microbiology. We hope she wins. Also, we’d like to thank her for showing us that learning science is so much fun!
