The 2018 football World Cup at Russia has been a roller-coaster ride of sorts. There were interesting games, but the tournament was plagued by major upsets from big teams and a slew of controversies. And if you were expecting for the saying “all’s well that ends well” to be fulfilled, Russian President Vladimir Putin made sure that that didn’t happen also.
As far as World Cup finals go, the match-up between France and Croatia was the best of the 21st century. It was thrilling, well contested and was a moment of redemption for France after the infamous head-butt. However, while the world was expecting it to be remembered for all those things, it was eclipsed by Putin’s umbrella.
Being the host country, it was customary for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be present at the prize distribution ceremony. However, his lack of hospitality stuck out like a sore thumb.
Does anyone else think it extraordinary that Putin stays nice and dry under a HUGE umbrella , while allowing the Presidents of Croatia and France to half drown under a DELUGE ? Hospitality ? Not so much. pic.twitter.com/Dv8AurHGCt

The World Cup final between France and Croatia was considerably clean and the weather largely agreed with the mood of the match. But when it drew to a close, it started to drizzle a bit. And by the time the French arrived to take the gold-plated trophy, it was raining cats and dogs.
Now, while the ecstatic players didn’t mind the rain very much, it would’ve been good if the official dignitaries weren’t left in the rain, right? Well, not according to Putin, who stayed dry and let Emmanuel Macron and Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović get drenched. And that obviously didn’t reflect well on Russia and on Putin himself.
Football fans who witnessed this couldn’t help themselves from mocking Vladimir Putin’s love for his umbrella and reacted with memes.
1. She has been the coolest person in the entire World Cup.
What a trouper the Croatian President is.
Had to wait the longest time for an umbrella though. Not cool, FIFA/Russia/whoever it was.

7. No, he’s absolutely not.
Bucketing down now. They've only brought one umbrella, and it's for Putin. He is NOT sharing it.

Considering Putin’s political career, he isn’t used to losing. So, there’s a slight possibility that that was his form of revenge for his country’s loss at the Quarter-Finals. However, maybe the internet can forgive him because he did bring out some extra umbrellas after everyone was soaking wet.
