Radhika Menon Becomes The 1st Woman In The World To Be Awarded For Exceptional Bravery At Sea

Five years ago, Radhika Menon ruled the headlines when she became the first woman to become the captain of Indian Merchant Navy.

This year she is going to receive an Award For Exceptional Bravery at Sea from International Maritime Organisation because she saved the lives of seven fishermen.

The fisherman almost thought that there are no hopes for survival.

The fishing boat “Durgamma” was carried away from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh to Gopalpurpura in Odisha, owing to the terrific storm. The fishermen were of the opinion that they would lose their precious lives.

But Menon’s team spotted them and jumped to their rescue in June last year.

The team saved their lives and it was quite a miraculous escape.

The families of fishermen had lost all hopes and were ready to perform the last rites, but thanks to Menon, they didn’t get to witness that.

She shared this in her email:

I am humbled, honored, and grateful. It is a maritime obligation to save souls in distress at sea and, as a seafarer and master in command of my ship, I just did my duty.”

Kudos to Radhika Menon for being so brave!

And as an Indian, I feel proud that she is receiving this award. 🙂
