Wrongly Convicted Man Builds A Software In Jail. It’s Now Used By Jails Across Haryana.

You can try and put me down, but you just can’t kill my spirit.

That seems to be the motto of ex-convict Amit Mishra, who was wrongly implicated for his wife’s death and was sent to jail.

While in jail, software engineer Amit Mishra, who used to work for a technology firm earlier, decided to put his skills to better use

With the help of two other inmates, he decided to digitize the jail canteen’s old coupon system. The software he created eventually led to the adoption of biometric machines to run operations.

“Fingerprints of all undertrials and convicts were collected. This helped authorities to record and maintain accounts of money deposited in the name of a particular inmate, track his criminal record, status of trail, dates and also number of times he has been hospitalized,” Mishra told Times of India

The software is named “Phoenix” and it helps digitize the automation of jail inmates and other jail operations.

As many as 19 jails across the state of Haryana has adopted the software while 3 more are to be added to the list soon.

Amit was later acquitted from all charges, but he didn’t drop the project and worked on it without taking any money from the prisons authorities. Kudos to Amit Mishra for re-instilling the faith in the age old adage, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
