The fuel price hike climate in India right now seems to be the perfect cesspool in which a car like Tesla could thrive. For quite some time now, Indians have been waiting with bated breath for one of the biggest innovators in the world to announce his entry into the Indian markets. And so far, it has only been a series of cryptic ‘definitely, maybe’s.
Remember back in May last year when Elon Musk had tweeted about his misconception about FDI regulations in India?
Maybe I'm misinformed, but I was told that 30% of parts must be locally sourced and the supply doesn't yet exist in India to support that.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 22, 2017
And the Indian Government was prompt to reply to his tweet with a series of clarifications?
Ever since then, fans of the tech genius and his brand of electric cars have been gunning for some good news. And Musk, who often interacts with his followers on Twitter, has been dropping occasional hints that Tesla might not be ready for India yet, but there was hope in the future.
And now, looks like Indians might get some closure, or possible a new campaign to rally behind, to bring Tesla to India, thanks to Elon Musk’s tweet!
It began when Twitter user @yoyovinzi replied to Musk’s tweet about Tesla Superchargers.
He (or should I say, his GIF) pretty much shed tears to lament the fact that Tesla still wasn’t in India.
No Tesla in India pic.twitter.com/NDtPEVYD0A

Musk’s reply shone like a huge beacon of hope for Indians, particularly because he mentioned that the fate of Tesla in India depended entirely on this one man, also an Indian!
Would love to be in India. Some challenging government regulations, unfortunately. Deepak Ahuja, our CFO, is from India. Tesla will be there as soon as he believes we should.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 30, 2018
The man in question, Deepak Ahuja is an IIT Varanasi alumnus from the batch of 1985 and has been working with Tesla for almost a decade. Musk’s tweet clearly indicates that the reigns of the Tesla’s electric chariot are entirely in the hands of Ahuja, who’ll be deciding when the time is ripe to arrive.
However, Elon Musk’s tweet seems to have triggered a campaign on Twitter, with people urging the government to look into the “challenging” regulations that Musk has mentioned and remedy them.
Tweets tagging PM Narendra Modi, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and several others have been shared, beseeching them to not this phenomenal opportunity slip from India’s grasp.
1. Resolve what’s keeping the world’s most innovative company at bay….
World’s most innovative company wants to enter India but finds regulations as deterrent.@narendramodi @arunjaitley @PMOIndia https://t.co/PWE2yDnMAL

2. Red tape playing spoilsport.
Companies are keen and bullish on India but red tapism is a hindrance. Regulations need to eased as such companies bring a huge pool of jobs and investment #BharatBachao #WednesdayWisdom. Please consider @PMOIndia @narendramodi @arunjaitley @PiyushGoyal https://t.co/K9O3Vr5M4S

3. A constant theme in these tweets has been a jibe at India’s ‘ease of doing business’ rank, which the government proclaimed, has been on the rise.
And then the govt talks about how we’ve risen in the ranks for ease of doing business. https://t.co/ZZISa8M9yd

5. It would be a shame indeed….
@sureshpprabhu It would be a shame if one of the most innovative companies in the world don't enter India because of govt. Regulations.

Author Chetan Bhagat’s tweet managed to perfectly sum up what was on everyone’s mind.
The govt should note that the world's biggest CEOs of the most innovative companies want to be in India but find the regulations too hard. They bring with them investments and jobs. Regulations must not be a hurdle to that. https://t.co/kFRxlhDYVg

Touché.
Here’s hoping these pleas fall on the right ears, and both Elon Musk and Tesla land on the Indian shores soon!
