Elderly Kerala Couple Recovers From Coronavirus, But Nurse Treating Them Tests Positive

In this prolonged battle against coronavirus, every little win goes a long away. From being the 5th country to isolate COVID-19 virus to manufacturing India’s first coronavirus testing kit, our nation has come together during these troubled times.

And, with over 1200 positive cases reported in India, the news of an elderly couple recovering from the deadly virus is an achievement in itself. Hailing from Ranni in Kerala, the couple, aged 93 and 88 had tested positive for coronavirus and were critical for days, reports NDTV.

According to the state government, the aged couple’s son along with his wife and child had flown down from Italy and tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month. The elderly couple had caught the virus after coming in contact with them. They were admitted to the Kottayam Medical College hospital after they developed a severe cough and chest pain.

The couple, who was already suffering from various age-related diseases, insisted on going back home during their treatment. According to India Today, the husband’s condition severely deteriorated and he was shifted to the ventilator as a life-saving measure. His wife, too, had developed severe urinary and bacterial infection.

However, the doctors and staff at the hospital managed to save their lives. A seven-member team of doctors led the elderly couple’s treatment. Also, 40 medical staff, including 25 nurses actively took part in their road to recovery. Unfortunately, a nurse, who took care of them, tested positive for COVID-19, reports Hindustan Times.

After the elderly couple and their family members, including their son Abraham Moncy, wife and grandson, who had returned from Italy, tested negative for the deadly virus, they were discharged from the hospital. The hospital staff gave them a warm send-off by after diligently treating them for 24 days. They cheered their patients with a cake and gave them a kit containing essential commodities.

The family was thankful to the entire medical staff and the government for their support and proper treatment. They will now be under home quarantine for 14 days. At a time when those above 60 fall under the high-risk category, the elderly couple, getting cured gives hope to the nation.
