Madurai Tea Shop Serves Garam Chai In Edible Biscuit Cups To Reduce Plastic Waste

Trust me when I say, ‘Hum Indians k pass har cheez ka jugaad hai.’ And at a time when Mother Nature has started punishing us for the harm done to her over the years, it is important that we mend our ways.

It is commonly known that non-biodegradable, single-use plastics and plastic products are choking our planet. Hence, taking cognizance of this grim reality, this tea-seller from Madurai came up with edible biscuit cups, reported The Hindu.

Tucked up in the busy West Masi Street, this little kiosk serves a variety of tea in these edible, chocolate-flavoured biscuit cups. And in the past one month of introducing the eatable cups to the people of Madurai, the shop has sold thousands of cups- 500 cups a day to be precise.

“Had it not been for the lockdown, we would have seen many more people crowding the shop,” says Vivek Sabaapathy, one of the owners of the shop who decided to serve chai in edible cups. Priced at Rs 20, the edible cups can hold 60 ml of hot tea for about 10 minutes. Once the tea is over, people can rejoice the wafer cups that might taste as a biscuit dipped in tea.

Ever since the State Government imposed a ban on plastic in January 2019, Sabaapathy has been looking for eco-friendly alternatives to serve his tea in. That’s when he came to know about a Hyderabad-based company who make these cups.

And as expected, people in the city love the environment-friendly alternative to plastic. “People are finding it safe, hygienic and a little more filling than the regular cup of tea, and are also happy about its zero-waste value,” explains Sabaapathy.

Sabaapathy is really happy with the customer reviews of the cups and hopes the manufacturing company can come up with multiple flavours of the biscuit cup soon.

Well, kudos to Vivek Sabaapathy for being vigilant of the crisis and looking for a safer option. Hope more people come up with similar innovative alternatives to plastic products.
