Viral ‘Durgesh’ Meme Is Actually A 16 YO Boy And His Disabled Father. Here’s Their Story.

Drugesh-Real-Story

Internet is generally a happy place, only if you don’t engage with trolls and stay away from the dark alleys of the web. But, one thing that we all love on the inter-web are memes. The funny ones crack us up instantly.

Floating on the web are innumerable meme templates. Amid them, some are funny, some are relatable, some are lame. But then, there are some people who become a template or are forced to.

Currently, desi netizens are tripping on a Durgesh meme, where a man was apparently cat-fished by him.

There were quite a lot of jokes that were made on Durgesh and Sanjay. But, there’s a dark side to the story which no one suspected.

It is learnt that the man who poses as Sanjay in the pictures, is not Sanjay but a victim of cyber-bullying. The victim’s brother, Sudhanshu Pandey, wrote in a Facebook post, the real story behind it and it’s disturbing.

The victim is a 16-year-old, first year student from Varanasi. His real name is Durgesh (as opposed to Sanjay used in the memes). The elderly man appearing in the post is his 51-year-old father Sanjay (as opposed to Durgesh used in the memes), who has undergone two brain surgeries and is physically disabled. He is  a government job holder.

Here’s the full Facebook post. (English translation in brackets inline)

“Friends, I have something very important to share. Please poora padhna. (read completely)
Aajkal meme market me ek naya material aaya he, uska naam he Durgesh, sab log hadd se aage troll kar rhe he use. (Now-a-days, there’s new meme material in the town, whose name is Durgesh. Everyone is trolling him beyond compare.)
Uski pics pe bahut bhadde comments ho rhe he, ye jo aap pics dekh rhe he, ye sab international level pe viral hui he, uske captions ki wajah se and log bahut share bhi kar chuke he. (People are leaving stinking comments on his pics; the pics that you’re viewing has gone viral internationally because of the captions associated with it. And people have shared it like crazy)
Now, it’s time to hear the truth.
Kaun he Durgesh? (Who’s this Durgesh?)
Ans: Mera bhai he wo. (He’s my brother)
And ye sab jo kuch bhi ho raha he usme uska koi haath nahi he. (And he has no hand in this whole shenanigans)
Uske kisi enemy ne Instagram par “Sanjay Kapoor” name se ek parody account banaya and ye sab post kiya.  (Someone who has a personal grudge against him has put his pictures on Instagram under the parody name ‘Sanjay Kapoor’.) It went viral in minutes.
Mere bhai ki kya galti thi? (What is my brother’s fault?)
Bas itna ki use apna insta account private nahi kiya tha (Just that he didn’t make his Insta account private?), and that scum used his innocence for his memes.
We don’t know who’s that bastard behind all this but whoever it is, bahut galat kiya he tune. (you’ve done a horrible thing)
And itna hi nahi us kamine ne Durgesh ke papa matlab mere uncle tak ko nahi choda and un par bhi memes bane ja rhe he. (Moreover, that bastard not only used my brother’s name but used his father (my uncle)’s pics too. He didn’t even spare him.)
C’mon yaar (mate), no one knows what things he has gone through.
2 brain surgeries, his body is too weak for all this bullshit.
Ek physically disabled 50-year father ka tum aise majak nahi uda sakte yaar. (Mate, how can you possibly make fun of a 50-year-old physically disabled father?)
Durgesh is his only child, just think of it.
Ye sab dekhkar unpar kya beet rahi hogi. (Can you even imagine what his father must be going through?)
Mera bhai bahut hi simple sa ladka he. (My brother is a very simple guy) And, I m proud of him.
10 saal ke age se hi bahut si responsibilities he uske upar (He has taken responsibilities of the whole family since he was 10-year-old) and he is working too hard for just his parents.
And aisa ladka ye sab deserve nahi karta. (Such a kid doesn’t deserve such negativity and mockery)
And if someone thinks ke ye sab karke wo mere bhai ko weak bana raha he. Toh ghar ja tu, hum sab uske saath he and he is very strong for all this. (If someone thinks that my brother is going to crumble under these cheap tricks, then get lost, we’re all with him and he is very strong for all this.)
A request to all my friends, please share as much as u can. (sic)”

Storypick reached out to Sudhanshu, who said that Durgesh who had no idea about the meme culture was shocked to hear about it. So, was his family. They are even confused upon the name reversal used in memes. Sudhanshu told us,

“He (Durgesh) is not into memes. His friends told me that he got such a sweet behavior that no one can be his enemy. The whole family is shocked as to why someone would do such a thing to Durgesh. But it’s heart-breaking to see my brother like this. I was the first one to inform him about all this. And the first thing which I heard from him was, ‘Maine kisi ka kya bigada he, mere saath aisa kyu ho raha he’ (sic).”

We hope the perpetrator is caught and the case gets a closure. Durgesh doesn’t deserve this. No one does.

We all have to be careful about the kind of memes we make or laugh at or react to. Because, for our fleeting moments of laughter you never know who might be suffering.
