Internet is generally a happy place, only if you don’t engage with trolls and stay away from the dark alleys of the web. But, one thing that we all love on the inter-web are memes. The funny ones crack us up instantly.
Floating on the web are innumerable meme templates. Amid them, some are funny, some are relatable, some are lame. But then, there are some people who become a template or are forced to.
Currently, desi netizens are tripping on a Durgesh meme, where a man was apparently cat-fished by him.

There were quite a lot of jokes that were made on Durgesh and Sanjay. But, there’s a dark side to the story which no one suspected.
It is learnt that the man who poses as Sanjay in the pictures, is not Sanjay but a victim of cyber-bullying. The victim’s brother, Sudhanshu Pandey, wrote in a Facebook post, the real story behind it and it’s disturbing.
The victim is a 16-year-old, first year student from Varanasi. His real name is Durgesh (as opposed to Sanjay used in the memes). The elderly man appearing in the post is his 51-year-old father Sanjay (as opposed to Durgesh used in the memes), who has undergone two brain surgeries and is physically disabled. He is a government job holder.
Here’s the full Facebook post. (English translation in brackets inline)
Storypick reached out to Sudhanshu, who said that Durgesh who had no idea about the meme culture was shocked to hear about it. So, was his family. They are even confused upon the name reversal used in memes. Sudhanshu told us,
“He (Durgesh) is not into memes. His friends told me that he got such a sweet behavior that no one can be his enemy. The whole family is shocked as to why someone would do such a thing to Durgesh. But it’s heart-breaking to see my brother like this. I was the first one to inform him about all this. And the first thing which I heard from him was, ‘Maine kisi ka kya bigada he, mere saath aisa kyu ho raha he’Â (sic).”
We hope the perpetrator is caught and the case gets a closure. Durgesh doesn’t deserve this. No one does.
We all have to be careful about the kind of memes we make or laugh at or react to. Because, for our fleeting moments of laughter you never know who might be suffering.
