Festivals are not just about celebration and merriment. It’s also about culture and traditions. And Christmas, of all festivals, has its own set of varied traditions. Family dinner, midnight mass, exchanging presents, visiting family etc. the list goes on.
While these are just the generic ones, people also start their own traditions. That’s exactly what Jimmy Fallon wanted to know this year – funny traditions that people follow for Christmas, unique to only them and their families.
He posted a quick question for his followers on Twitter and urged them to use the hashtag #MyDumbTradition and Twitterverse was quick to respond.
It's Hashtags time! Tweet out your weirdest or silliest holiday tradition and tag it with #MyDumbTradition. Could be on the show!

Here are some of the best responses to his question about #MyDumbTradition.
1. Imagine looking at the same wallpaper every day for a year, even if you don’t like it.
Every year my family sets each other's phone backgrounds and we have to keep them until next year. So my brother will have shirtless (modern-day) John Travolta staring at him until 2019. #MyDumbTradition

2. This sounds like a lot of fun!
Someone throws an oven mitt on the floor and shouts. We take turns throwing the oven mitt and taking the blame. This started after my sister cooked her first big family dinner and over reacted to how her husband made the gravy – “Keith! You ruined Christmas!” #MyDumbTradition

3. I hope the cat speaks to you once, just for the sake of faith you have in them.
When I was little my mom told me animals can speak at midnight on Christmas Eve. I'm an old-ass lady now, but I still check in with the cats every year just in case she's not wrong (she is). #MyDumbTradition

4. Hide & Seek with Baby Jesus.
My mom hides the baby Jesus, from the nativity scene, every Christmas. On Christmas Day we have to find him so we know how the Sheppard’s and wisemen felt. #MyDumbTradition

5. I hope y’all are in sync though, otherwise, it would be a disaster.
#MyDumbTradition We used to hold hands and sing around the Christmas tree, "Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree. How are your branches?"

6. This is so adorable in its own little adorable way!
Every year we order Chinese takeout on Christmas Eve, because of a contract my parents signed about ten years ago. They have yet to disappoint #MyDumbTradition. pic.twitter.com/hScsnO4pzt

7. An inside joke in the name of tradition, NICE!
Us kids, well in our 30s and 40s:/ at dinner have a game. We refer whatever anyone is saying to sex. And everyone is clueless why we are laughing. It gets pretty funny after awhile. I suggest you try it with a guest on the show. Just let the audience in on it. #MyDumbTradition

8. That’s CRUEL, but funny!!!

11. Post-Christmas sounds more fun than actual Christmas.
One year, after Xmas, my Mom got so upset with us ignoring the dried out tree, she grabbed it herself and threw it onto the lawn. Now we have a tree-tossing contest each year. #MyDumbTradition

13. I would laugh at this EVERY YEAR!
Every year my mom eats those Chocolate covered Cherries. My mom will keep offering one to me. I decline and she keeps asking, “What’s wrong afraid to pop a cherry?” She does this EVERY year! #MyDumbTradition

Whatever it may be, dumb or entertaining or just plain banal, traditions are traditions. They add that little personal value to the occasion and that’s all festivals are about. You might not even realize it, but you are setting traditions for the future. And I believe it goes a long way in shaping you as a person. So keep ’em coming, guys!
