7 YO Boy Needing Nose Surgery Is Mistakenly Operated For Hernia In Kerala, Doctor Suspended

Several cases of medical apathy come to light in the country time and again. From the Odisha doctor who performed surgery on a woman’s right leg instead of left to the recent case of AIIMS, Rishikesh, where a man was wrongly diagnosed HIV positive, cases of medical negligence are on a rise in the country.

Another recent case of severe medical apathy has shocked Kerala. Mohammed Danish, suffering from nasal polyps visited the medical college in Manjeri town, near Kochi with his parents. The 7-year-old boy had to undergo nose surgery in the hospital.

Another patient named Dhanush was to undergo surgery for hernia. The similarity in names of both the boys lead to confusion and doctor performed hernia operation on Danish instead of Dhanush, reports India Today.

“There will be no leniency shown on those who err when they engage in treating patients. Those treating patients should do it with the utmost care. A detailed probe has been ordered and the boy will now be treated at state government’s expenses,” State Health Minister K K Shylaja said in a statement. She has also ordered a probe to investigate the case and suspended the doctor.

“There is serious negligence on behalf of the staff including the doctor,” rights panel member K Mohan Kumar said. He has also ordered the medical college superintendent to submit a report with the statements from all the medical staff present inside the operation theatre.

It’s high time, authorities wake up and show some seriousness towards their job. After all, we address doctors as God on the Earth and they should certainly abide by their responsibilities. Period!
