In an era where selflessness, even as a word is hard to find, there are people who still live for the cause of others. Who dedicate their lives to serve the needy from all walks and continue to pose as role models for the society.
Call me whatever names you’d like but these unsung heroes are the reason for my optimism and hope. One that inspires me to be the change I want to see in the world is the story of a 91-year-old, ‘Doctor Dadi‘. Indore’s first woman doctor, she was recently conferred the fourth-highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri.
A gynaecologist, Dr Bhakti Yadav has treated over 1 lakh patients free of cost including women who cannot afford healthcare. Acknowledging her work, the government awarded her with the Padma Shri, the honour she truly deserves.
She was awarded the esteem with other achievers like the captain of Indian cricket team of blind Shekhar Naik, Meenakshi Amma who teaches Kalaripayattu (indigenous martial art) and many more.
A nonagenarian, doctor dadi is in fact, the first woman in Indore to get the MBBS degree, a qualification she has never used for money.
She passed out with MGM Medical College’s first batch in 1948. Early in her career, she refused a government job and joined Nandlal Bhandari Maternity Home for the wives of poor cloth mill workers.
Needless to say, even Twitter took to congratulate and root for Indore’s (and now India’s) favourite doctor.
