Diu Sets An Example! Becomes The First Indian City To Run Completely On Solar Energy

As the pollution levels in the country continue to grow at an alarming rate, we need to buckle up and act towards a solution and now! The country has struggled to cope up with the increasing levels of pollution over the years and the previous year saw a gigantic rise with Delhi crossing all limits.

However, with Narendra Modi chalking out a 10-point action plan to promote solar energy, the future looks promising. And guess what? One Indian city has already hit the bullseye.

Not any of the metro cities, but it is Diu which has taken a massive leap in the solar power sector and now runs completely on solar energy!

For a stunning fact for you all to know, Diu is now the only city in India where 100% of the electrical needs are satisfied by solar power. Diu stretches over a geographical area of just 42 sq km but solar power plants have been installed in over 50 acres of land despite facing scarcity of space.

A total of 13 megawatts of electricity from solar power-generating facilities is what the city generates in its strive towards betterment. The rooftop solar plants account for 3MW of the electricity while other solar plants generate 10MW combinedly.

Before shifting to solar power, Diu ran on electrical energy supplied from a power grid owned by Gujarat Government which met with huge line loss. Following the incident, the local power company in the Union Territory started producing electricity from solar power and it saw a significant improvement in the loss of electricity.

Speaking about the same to TOI, Daman and Diu electricity department’s executive engineer Milind Ingle said,

“Population of Diu is 56,000 only. For water and electricity, the Union territory was solely dependent on the Gujarat government. To overcome this limitation, the administration of the Union territory decided to set up solar power plants in Diu.”

He continued

“Diu’s peak time demand for electricity goes up to 7MW and we generate about 10.5MW of electricity from solar energy daily. This is way more than the consumption demand requirement.”

The solar power has also come as a blessing to the local residents of the small city as local residents as their monthly charges have seen a reduction of around 12%. Considering the magnanimity of India as a country, this might be a small step towards curbing the extreme pollution levels, but definitely the right one!
