Everyone has their own way of celebrating Valentine’s Day. While couples usually go to fancy restaurants, buy each other gifts and do all the cheesy stuff; singles usually take matters into their own hands (IYKWIM ;)). However, singles at a Delhi University college have their own special way of celebrating the day of love.
Hostelers in Delhi’s iconic Hindu College choose an actress every year as ‘Damdami Mai’ for Valentine’s day. This year, they have honoured Disha Patani with the title.
Singles celebrate the day of love by worshipping ‘Damdami Mai’ at the famous ‘Virgin Tree’ located at the campus. Legend says that those who participate, find the love of their life in 6 months and lose their virginity within a year.
Every year on the 14th of Feb, students decorate the holy tree with balloons and condoms (among other things) and gather around it for the celebrations.
Second and third-year hostellers from the college choose one actress every year. Vaibhav Singh, a second-year student says,
“We picked her (DISHA) after having a meeting. Along with Disha, one name that was also considered was of Nargis Fakhri, but since most of the guys liked Disha, we have chosen her as our Damdami Mai,”
Vaibhav then explained the details of the rituals to be carried out during the ‘holy’ celebration.
Things people do for love (and tharak). 😉
