Festivals are a very lonely time for anybody who lives in a different country or city away from their families and loved ones. If you are one of them, then many of your colleagues and friends must go back home during Diwali, leaving you alone in a strange city to celebrate by yourself. Surrounded by homesickness, sometimes a kind gesture from a stranger is enough to change your mood entirely. Here’s an example.
A woman named Surbhi Jain took to X to share how 5 years ago, she was in Bengaluru for Diwali and everyone she knew in the city had gone back home to be with their families. However, a delivery executive who brought her food was the only person to wish her ‘Happy Diwali’ and it brightened her day completely.
“Five years ago, I was in Bangalore for Diwali, and it was a truly sad and lonely day. All my friends, flatmates, and colleagues had gone home. Home alone in a big society, the only person who wished me ‘Happy Diwali’ in-person was Ramesh, the delivery guy who brought food along with a warm smile. Let’s remember to show kindness to those who brighten our days, even in small ways,” she wrote on social media.
Have a look at her post here:

Several people online, who have been on the same boat, shared similar stories of being lonely during festivals and what they did to battle it. Have a look:
This has happened to me last to last year, we gathered whoever was lonely in the city and not home (that we knew of), 4 logon ki diwali and it was vv wholesome, we played monopoly took pictures of cats and ate laddoos
Festivals should never be celebrated alone ✨ https://t.co/xWaFC8mXgW pic.twitter.com/nkabO5tFAW

This is giving off Harry Potter staying over at Hogwarts for Christmas energy. But yes, approve the sentiment 🙂👍🏼

This is what I love about our country. Many of us who run behind career goals or setting businesses forget to take a break and wish others for their well being or wish them happy Diwali. People like Ramesh always make us think which is more important in life.

I was alone in Mumbai last Diwali and was greeted by almost every delivery person irrespective of their religion. Sometimes we must realise that while not going to home may be a choice for us, it’s an underprivilege for so many who are expecting higher orders and bigger tips.

When I worked as a delivery gig worker for almost 4-5 years just out of passion for my driving and exploring any new city where my transfer took place at that moment I personally felt the respect and humility for them which should be given everytime. Happy Diwali to all the gig.

This Diwali will be my first away from home, and reading this just makes me feel even more homesick :’)
