15 YO Delhi Girl Gets Parents Booked For Accepting ₹20L Bribe From Rapist To Settle Case

Nirbhaya‘s fate in 2012 boiled the blood of Indians all over. It brought to limelight the sad state of the country in terms of protecting our daughters from rape. Six years later, here we are in the aftermath of yet another protest, demanding justice for the little girl from Kathua. And while we are busy pointing fingers and blaming each other, we often sink to the level of the accused. We lose every modicum of humanity in the adrenaline rush of a new debate.

In Nirbhaya’s & recently Kathua rape case, they left behind parents to witness and lament all this. But for one 15-year-old, her parents were the ones who sank to the level of her rapists.

According to Hindustan Times, a 15-year-old rape survivor in Delhi has lodged a case against her parents for accepting a bribe from the ones who raped her. The parents had agreed to compel the girl to change her statement in court about her gang rape.

The girl had gone missing from her home in Prem Nagar, Aman Vihar on August 30 last year. Following which a kidnapping case was registered at the Aman Vihar police station.

She returned home a week later, alleging that two men had kidnapped her, one of whom was a local property dealer. According to her statement to the police, she was taken to multiple places in Noida and Ghaziabad where she was repeatedly gang-raped. They had let her go after a week. The police registered a case against the accused and arrested them. However, they got off on bail recently.

Her parents had then been approached to compel her to change her statement in court in the gang-rape case. Speaking of the unimaginable scenario, an officer said:

“Some people known to the accused had approached her parents and offered Rs 20 lakh to get the girl to change her statement in court. Recently, they had given Rs 5 lakh cash as advance payment. The girl was aware of it.”

The parents have allegedly been forcing the girl to change her statement ever since. The girl’s refusal to oblige to the injustice resulted in frequent quarrels with them.

Left with no choice, she decided to trust the police over her parents. The police describe the scenario as such:

“On April 10, her parents were away in court when the girl decided to report the matter to the police. She knew that the money was hidden under the bed. She picked up the cash and without counting it, reached the Prem Vihar police chowki,” said an investigating officer.

The girl came with a wad of notes and said it was Rs 3 lakh. But when we counted, it was Rs 4.96 lakh,” says  MN Tiwari, deputy commissioner of police (outer).

Tiwari adds that the girl’s parents have been booked under the Juvenile Justice Act and for criminal intimidation, threatening someone to give false evidence and criminal conspiracy.

The DCP says:

“We arrested the girl’s mother. Her father is on the run. We are also looking for the people who were facilitating this crime.”

The child has been sent to a children’s home, by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to whom she was handed over.

I’m at a loss for words after hearing about this. Parents bring a child into this world with the promise of always having her/his back. And when your child goes through an unspeakable horror, you are supposed to be there holding their hand helping them get justice and move on with their lives. While we, unfortunately, live in a society where rape culture is horrifyingly prevalent, have we truly lost all sense of right and wrong?

And to the girl, we’re sorry you had to go through this. We’re sorry you had your trust shattered by your own family. We hope you find justice and find it in you to climb over this and have a brighter future.
