As per a report in TOI, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has planned to take penal action and issued orders for a crackdown on those who would be found wasting drinking water. Inspection and challan teams would fine Rs. 2,000 for the first time, and then Rs. 5,000 per day for repeat violators.

Moreover, people can click photographs of others like spotted wasting water and report it to the authorities as well. “People can inform us about such violations by taking photos and tagging us on the official Twitter handle @delhijalboard or by lodging a complaint on the helpline number 1916,” says Raghav Chadha who is the DJB vice-chairman.

“Ideally, people should mandatorily use overflow prevention valves or tank overflow alarms to stop water wastage. It is also their duty to fix leaks in pipes, taps, and toilets. Watter-efficient devices, faucets, and aerators are also available in the market. We should avoid using drinking water wastefully in gardens and lawns. It is a penal offense to wash cars and floors with piped water,” he added.

“We have limited water from Yamuna and underground aquifers. It is our collective duty to treat water as a limited resource,” he concludes.

Hopefully, this step will help increase public consciousness regarding water scarcity and wastage. We hope that everyone starts using water judiciously.
