In a shocking incident that was reported from Delhi’s Shahdara area, a 20-year-old woman who was allegedly a survivor of gang rape was paraded in the neighbourhood by other women with her face blackened, hair chopped and wearing a garland of slippers. Visuals from the incident went viral on Twitter.

According to TOI, this is allegedly a case of neighbourhood enmity. The woman had been living in Shahdara area for the past few years. A man living in the same neighbourhood developed feelings for her. However, the woman didn’t reciprocate any of his advances. A few months ago, the man committed suicide. His family, on the other hand, blamed the woman for his suicide.

According to NDTV, the woman was abducted from her home by 3 men who were involved in the illicit trade of liquor and drugs locally. The 3 men allegedly gang-raped the woman. Later, the woman was made to wear a garland of slippers, her face was blackened, her hair was chopped off, and she was paraded in the neighbourhood by women. The accused women are from the man’s (the one who died by suicide) family.

Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal, who met the survivor, demanded strict action in this case. The Delhi Police has already arrested 4 accused. Raids are ongoing to arrest the other accused.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has condemned the incident, calling it “shameful”. He has asked the police to take strict action.

“Delhiites will not tolerate such heinous crimes and criminals at any cost,” he tweeted.

The survivor is currently hospitalised and is undergoing treatment.

We hope that the law takes its course and the perpetrators are punished accordingly.
