‘Delhi Crime’ Becomes First Indian Program To Win An Emmy Award, Fans Shower Love

Back in September, ‘Delhi Crime’ was nominated for the 48th International Emmy Awards. Yesterday, the series based on the Nirbhaya gang-rape case won the award in the Best Drama Series category.

The Indian Express quoted writer and director Richie Mehta saying, “I dedicate this award to all the women who not just endure the violence that so many men inflict on them, but are then tasked to solve the problem. Finally, to the tireless mother, and her daughter. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about you both and what the world subjected you two to. And I hope none of us ever forget that.”

Actress Shefali Shah who played the role of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi in the show was quoted saying, “I started screaming like a maniac the moment they announced the winner. Honestly, this win belongs to the entire team. I cannot take the responsibility on my own. I can’t wait to celebrate this with them all.”

Hindustan Times quoted her adding,

“The story needed to be taken to the world. I’m possessive and partial to the show. For me, it has always been a winner. The nomination at the Emmys was a humbling experience because here we’re talking about shows that are picked from across the globe. Yes, there’s another stamp on it now and it does make a difference. But irrespective, even if hadn’t won, the show is a winner for me. One of the first awards that we won was at the Asian Academy Creative Awards. We also went to the Sundance Film Festival. So every time you get that kind of recognition, it’s incredible.”

Here is how everyone reacted to the win:

Congratulations Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Adil Hussain, Rajesh Tailang, Vinod Sherawat, Denzil Smith, Gopal Dutt, Yashaswini Dayama, Jaya Bhattacharya, and everyone else who worked on the gritty crime drama.
