10 Cricketers Who Are Doing Completely Different Jobs Now

Anyone who has ever been a part of an International Cricket team has been a hero to thousands. It doesn’t matter if that someone had been a legendary cricket or just a one match wonder – once a cricketer always a member of the club of higher mortals because cricket, as well all know, is a religion in India. It is expected that cricketers, even if dropped off the team or retired, would stick to a profession associated with the game.

However, there are a few who chose to pursue a profession that has no relation to cricket once their cricketing days got over. Let’s take a look at these players:

1. Joginder Sharma

The magic last over specialist, Joginder Sharma was the man who brought a young Indian team their first Twenty20 world cup in 2007 with his fantastic bowling spell. He stood up to those breathless moments of the final over of the final match between India and Pakistan and the rest is history.

However, Sharma’s cricketing career never really flourished as expected and today, he serves as a DSP in Haryana Police. Well, at least, he’s serving the nation in a noble way.

 

2. Salil Ankola

Fans of Indian cricket would remember him as a part of India’s 1996 World Cup. Salil Ankola’s consistent performance for Maharashtra state team earned him a spot on the International squad for the first time in 1989.

However, as destiny had for him, Ankola was detected with a tumor in his shin bone and he had no choice but to say goodbye to cricket and embrace his career in Bollywood. Quite a popular face on television, Ankola can be spotted in the Arbaz khan hosted show, Power Couple.

 

3. Shanthakumaran Sreesanth

Although his name has ‘santh’ in it, this medium-pace bowler from Kerala was one of the most hyperactive players in the field. Although at one point, it did look like Sreesanth would make it as one of the finer players in Indian cricket, drop in performance, bad conduct and eventually spot-fixing allegations cost him his cricketing career.

Known for his celebratory dance moves on-field, Sreesanth decided to move into the tinsel town and today, he’s one of the upcoming stars on Mollywood.

 

4. Arshad Khan

Probably one of the most unfortunate turn of events for a talented international cricketer. Arshad Khan, Pakistan’s right-handed batsman and a useful right-arm break bowler, showed potential on various occasions.

However, having been dropped from the team and not ever being able to make it back, Khan moved to Sydney, Australia for a new beginning. However, this new beginning was a career as a cab driver in the streets of Sydney.

 

5. Debashish Mohanty

The fast bowler from Odisha had been one of the highest wicket-takers of the country. He was one of the key players in India’s victory in the Sahara Cup against Pakistan during the 90s. He’s also one of the few players to have a the record of taking ten wickets in domestic cricket.

Mohanty, although an excellent bowler lost his place in the team to Ajit Agarkar and currently is employed by the National Aluminium Company Limited, Odisha.

 

6. Saddagopan Ramesh

Saddagopan Ramesh was quite a useful opening batsman in the international test cricket team of India. However, his poor form for a prolonged period of time cost him his spot in the international squad. Ramesh chose to give up his career in cricket and like many cricketers do, decided to join the film industry.

If you’re into Tamil cinema, you may have spotted Ramesh in the 2008 flick, Santosh Subramaniam and also, Potta Potti.

 

7. Andrew Flintoff

One of the finest all-rounders in international cricket, Andrew Flintoff has been a key member of the English cricket team. He has also participated in the IPL after retiring from the national team before drifting into an entirely different career – professional boxing.

Flintoff, 6’4, put an end to all apprehensions regarding his career choice by beating down America’s Richard Dawson on his professional boxing debut.

 

8. Deep Dasgupta

Deep Dasgupta was the man in charge behind the stumps for the Indian cricket for eight test and five one-day international matches. He was replaced by Ajay Ratra in the Indian cricket team and found his place in Bengal state team where he stepped in as the captain after Saurav Ganguly resigned.

However, Dasgupta eventually ceased to be associated with cricket and now he works for CBRE Group Inc., an American real estate company.

 

9. Dilip Doshi

The Indian left-arm spinner was well past thirty when his test debut. However, by the time he retired, he had 114 wickets from 33 matches. Upon retiring Dilip Doshi decided to drift completely away from the world of cricket and focus on business.

With his family business, Entrack International, Dilip Doshi introduced the luxury brands of Mont Blanc pens to India in 1994 and over the years, spread it over 17 boutiques all over the country.

 

 10. Curtley Ambrose

The 6’7, Antiguan express bowler who had been one of the key members of the West Indies’ formidable bowling attack, has earned his name as a legend in the Hall of Fame of world cricket. However, years after his retirement, Ambrose made the most interesting career shift – the most interesting decision ever.

One of the most feared fast bowlers in cricket’s history, Ambrose is now a reggae musician who plays the bass in a band called The Baldhead.

Well, some of them just made the perfect switch – others, not so much…
