Waking up to bags of cash at our doorstep is a dream that we all wish comes true one day! What if something like this really happens? What if one day you get an SMS from your bank that says Rs 85 lakh have been transferred to your account? Any broke ass, just like me would first of all try and figure out ‘Where the heck this amount has come from?’
Have my parents transferred it to my account? Impossible, they don’t even give me my pocket money anymore! My friends? But they are as broke as I am! And lastly, we gotta settle on the fact that it must be a mistake and call the bank!
But a couple from Pennsylvania decided to go on a spending spree instead! One fine morning, an amount of 120,000$ (INR 85,00,000) was deposited in the BB&T bank account of Robert and Tiffany Williams, reports ABC News.
The couple was surely baffled to see such a huge amount deposited in their bank account but hardly bothered to call the bank and check about the transaction.
Moreover, they decided to go shopping with the amount! They reportedly bought an SUV, two four-wheelers, a camper, and a car trailer. Apart from getting their cars serviced with the amount, they also paid several household bills with the money. They also lent $15,000 (INR 10,73,7040) to the friends who were in need of money. Well, their blissful big money dream lasted two and a half weeks.
The bank finally realized its goof up and contacted the couple to inform them that the amount that was accidentally transferred to their account and told Tifanny that she was supposed to pay the amount back to the bank. At first, she assured that she will soon figure out a plan to repay the money to the bank but eventually ended all the communication with the bank.
“That is kind of shocking, with all the procedures the banks have set up, checking and double-checking and triple-checking, there’s no way anybody gets away with that stuff,” Nate Weaver, a neighbor of the Williams’, told WNEP.
During the investigation, the couple had admitted their fault andthe money despite knowing that it did not belong to them. They were arrested under the charges of theft and receiving stolen property and released after signing a bond of 25,000$ (INR 17,92,962) each.
Now that’s what we call “4 din ki chandni fir andheri raat” in real life! What are your thoughts on the entire incident? Do tell us!
