Desis List Dos & Don’ts To Survive In A Corporate Job After 20-YO Intern Asks For Advice

Ten years back, I got my first job. I was interning for a company and had no idea how the corporate world worked. It was with time and innumerable conversations with colleagues and seniors that I learnt about work culture, what needs to be done, what needs to be talked about, and what can be avoided. After all these years, I understood one thing for sure – working in a corporate office is like a game of chess.

Only being good at your job is not enough. You must network, build a good relationship with your manager, steer clear of office politics and when the time demands it, play it as well. There are so many things to learn, especially if you are a newbie.

Having said that, a 20-year-old woman took to Reddit’s subreddit r/Bangalore to seek advice on the what-to-dos and what-not-to-dos of the corporate world. She revealed that she would be interning for an MNC in Bangalore and wanted to know how to survive. Have a look at her post here:

Must knows to survive the corporate world from bangalore

And so, people had a lot of things to share and advice. They took all their years’ worth of experience to help the newbie and listed the important things she needed to keep in mind. Here’s a look at some of them.

Putting things down in writing, especially via email.

Your colleagues are your colleagues, not your friends.

Don’t be shy to ask for leaves. Steer clear of office romance.

Don’t respond to work messages after work hours. It’s not worth it.  Say yes to new kinds of work if you want to expand your horizon.

Don’t engage in personal conversations much.

Let people know about the work you’ve done. Learn from all departments.

Learn about the hierarchy at work. Talk to everyone as you might get to learn new things.

If you fail, don’t worry. Try again. Everyone messes up, even seniors.

Be patient. Stay calm.

These are some of the top rules one must follow to make their professional life a bit easier. Do you agree with them?
