“Never stop learning because life never stops teaching.” Anand Nageshiya, a murder convict learned about the value of education while in prison. The 40-year-old was jailed for murdering his paternal uncle over some family dispute back in 2005, reports The New Indian Express. However, with a new perspective for life, Anand was excited to be reunited with his family in Aamdarha village, Chhattisgarh.

After spending 15 years and 5 months in jail, he was looking forward to seeing his daughter who was barely over a year old when he was convicted. However, his joy vanished when he realized his daughter was struggling to attend her online classes as she didn’t have access to any gadgets. Not wanting his daughter to miss out on the opportunity of studying, Anand rushed to the market to purchase a smartphone for Yamini who studies in Class 12 in a government school.

But how did he get the money? Well, he bought the phone with the incentive money he earned for his work inside the prison during all those years. He was quoted saying,

“I was moved when my daughter told me she was not having any device to attend online classes. She wished to become a doctor and render her service to humanity by joining the medical profession. I realized the importance of education while in jail. I will leave no stone unturned to ensure my daughter doesn’t face any hurdle to pursue her dream.”

In fact, Anand’s premature release was because of his good conduct in prison. Rajendra Gaikwad, superintendent at Ambikapur Central Jail, was quoted saying, “He along with 19 others were recommended to the government for granting remission of the sentence from Ambikapur Central Jail after they were found maintaining overall good behavior consistently.

“We saw Nageshiya, who was serving life imprisonment for murder, has downright reformed and disciplined himself and his name was cleared on the grounds of good conduct.”

He added that Anand’s commendable action will set an example for other prisoners about the importance of educating a girl. “The prisoners who work inside the jail get an incentive amount of Rs 60 per day for semi-skilled and Rs 75 for skilled labor. He invested his savings for  good cause.” Anand, who learned gardening and carpentry in prison, said, “Our family including my two brothers have 3 acres of agricultural land. We look forward towards livelihood security in horticulture.”

Well, we wish the father-daughter duo good luck for their future.
