These Teenagers Invented A Condom That Changes Colour When In Contact With STIs

A unique way to detect Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs) was conceived by three teenagers at Isaac Newton Academy in Ilford. The ‘smart’ condom they invented tends to change colour when in contact with any STIs. The students won the first place in TeenTech awards, winning a trip to Buckingham Palace and a sum total of £1,000.

Daanyaal Ali, 14, Muaz Nawaz, 13, and Chirag Shah, 14, said that the aim of this invention was to prompt people to seek treatment for STIs. The condoms are layered with antibiotics that change colour on interaction with antigens of sexual diseases. The colours change depending on the disease. For example:

  • Chlamydia – Green
  • Herpes – Yellow
  • Syphilis – Blue

The invention sure will make the entire process of detecting STIs a lot easier and safer for the future generations. This will enable people to take immediate steps without invasive treatments by doctors. The teenagers knew that STIs are a great problem in UK. “We saw a gap in the market and we wanted to help people feel safer”, said Ali.

Various condom companies have started approaching the teens, whereas the TeenTech CEO Maggie Philbin emphasized that the colour changing condoms are still at the concept stage. Although, it is unclear as to whether the condom detects both the wearer’s and the recipient’s infections.

Some of the other ideas that were featured in the competition included a bracelet capable of measuring the users’ pulse and an app that calculates the monetary value of household chores with the intention of helping children argue for increase in pocket money.
