After Gurudwaras, Delhi Churches Open Doors For Victims Of Violence In The Capital

37 lives have been lost to the riots of north-east Delhi and over 200 people have been severely injured, according to a report by TOI. The violence on the roads of Delhi today over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act is the worst case of mob violence that the country has seen in decades. Gurudwaras in Delhi have been kind enough to open their doors to the victims of the violence and provide them with shelter.

Following suit, the National Council of Churches has made an official declaration to provide shelter to the victims of the north-east Delhi riots, reports National Herald.

The NCCI has released a statement online whereby they have condemned the violent acts on innocent lives. They wrote:

“Humanity has been knocked down one more time. Our houses burnt. Our kindred killed. Our peace destroyed, and future betrayed. We have not learnt from our past. In what happened in parts of New Delhi, our national capital, we have been brought down to ashes once again.”

The NCCI also criticised the government for their inability to control the situation and went on to ask the common people to help those in need.

“On a day such as this we appeal to the members of the different Christian traditions to facilitate each other, and all others of different faith traditions and ideological persuasions in their neighbourhoods, to rise from the ashes. We will not be cowed down. We will rise.”

They then addressed the churches and Christian organisations located within the affected area to open their doors to the victims.

“We appeal to the Churches and Christian Organisations in the vicinity of the affected areas to respond appropriately to those in need. We urge our constituents everywhere to stand in solidarity with victim communities in their locales and foster an atmosphere of peace and human security across the country.”
