‘Badhaai Do’ Actor Chum Darang Talks About Facing Racism On The Day Of Audition

Many of us are aware of the kind of discrimination that is faced by people from the Northeast. And there was a significant rise in the stigma and harassment when the Covid-19 pandemic started. When it comes to the film industry, actors from the Northeast are often typecasted and rarely given an impactful role to play.

Chum Darang, who is to be seen in the film ‘Badhaai Do’ alongside Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkummar Rao, shared how she was offered roles like that of a spa employee. She further claimed that her day-to-day life isn’t easy.

Hindustan Times quoted her saying:

“I was offered such roles, like that of a spa employee, and I was scared that if I agreed to do them, I would be typecast. And this is what actors from the northeast fear. Not just in movies, but in day-to-day life as well, things are not easy.”

Recalling the day when she was to give an audition for ‘Badhaai Do’, the actor revealed that she was harassed by two boys who called her ‘Corona’.

“When I was called for my audition for Badhaai Do and this was in March 2020, on my way to the venue, two boys shouted ‘corona’ at me and I started crying. For my audition, I had to do a scene that required me to shout and I could actually do it really well because of that incident.”

The kind of harassment that people from the Northeast experience daily is nothing but condemnable. This needs to stop.
