Rejoice! ‘Chuddies’ Becomes The Latest Indian Word To Enter Oxford English Dictionary

If you are an Indian, you know how the word “Chuddy” holds a special fan base in our country! The typical, endearing word for underpants right from the time of Mowgli, can easily be a synonym to panties, briefs, boxers, shorts etc. but none of them captures the range of ‘chuddies’. Agree?

Well, the time isn’t far when people in the West would also be obsessing over this word for underpants. Officially, ‘Chuddies’ is now a legitimate English word! Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has included ‘Chuddies’, as part of its the latest addition of 650 words to its database.

Identifying it is an Indian English word in origin, the Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘chuddies’ as: “Short trousers, shorts. Now usually: underwear; underpants.”

Explaining about the emergence and significance of how the word gained popularity, OED says, “Our coverage of British Indian usage gets an update with the addition of the dismissive kiss my chuddies (underpants), popularized as a catchphrase by actor and writer Sanjeev Bhaskar playing one half of the teenage duo known as the Bhangra Muffins in the 1990s BBC comedy sketch show Goodness Gracious Me.”

However, this isn’t the first time an Indian word has found its place in the prestigious dictionary. Other Indian words that were earlier made a part of OED are ‘Aiyo’, ‘Badmash’, ‘Bhelpuri’, ‘Chutney’, ‘Dhaba’, ‘Didi’, ‘Pukka’, ‘Yaar’ and so on.

Anyway, who would have ever thought that ‘Chuddies’ will make Indians proud one day! It’s time to celebrate, yay!
