You never know the kind of effect body-shaming has on people. And it is not just people with bigger, fuller bodies undergoing the shaming. Even people who have a petite figure are called ‘patli lakdi’, one amongst the many other names, and it’s absolutely unacceptable.
Insulting and making fun of somebody’s body is never okay. Each has their own body type and none will be identical to the other. Hence, expecting one to have the “perfect” figure is unfair and constant humiliation takes a kind of emotional toll which cannot be fathomed by anyone else.
A woman in China recently stabbed her boyfriend to death after he fat-shamed her. It was a hot day and the girl wanted to eat ice-cream, to which the guy objected saying she was already fat.
According to sources, the boyfriend said, “You are so fat and you still want to eat ice cream”.
This triggered the woman’s fury and she entered a nearby store, bought a pair of scissors, and returned to stab the boyfriend multiple times till he fell on the floor surrounded by a pool of blood in broad daylight. They had been dating for just a month.
People walking by the neighbourhood immediately called the police but by the time they arrived with a paramedic, the guy was already dead.
Sources revealed that the woman tried to escape but was soon arrested.
Is fat-shaming is a reason to kill someone? Absolutely not. But does imposing socially constructed ideas of beauty on someone to the extent of humiliating them lead to crimes? Yes.
