15 Ways Childhood Was Different For Those Who Grew Up In Strict Families

Childhood definitely marks for the most memorable phase of our entire lives. It was always high on joy quotient and the most depressing it got was when we gulped down the last drop of Rasna on the last eve of summer vacation.

However, it was not just the school that made it tough for us. Sometimes, in fact, schools acted as an escape system for those who grew up in strict households.

Some of the situations that kids from the 90s who spent their growing up age in rigid rules can perfectly relate to are:

1. Fathers never had too much involvement in our lives but…

…When they did call out our name (which was a very rare thing), it made us shiver.

2. The mental preparation for seeking permission for outings used to take a week’s time

At times, we turned into rebels and walked out without informing them, but this way we never really enjoyed the outings. In fact, we remained consumed with apprehension and fears of volcanoes that would erupt once we got back home.

3. Hearing our friends gossip about their sleepover parties and shopping trips, always left us in the self-pity zone

And sometimes, we could not help but wonder if we were really of the same age as them.

4. We could never really muster the courage to crack boy-girl jokes in front of our parents

Because the air at home was always too uptight.

5. Seeing our friends hugging and being friendly with their parents, always reminded us of something gravely missing from our lives

And so, we never believed in the concept of ‘parents can be your friends too.’

6. Friendship with opposite sex was always frowned upon

And almost every time, our moms suspected them to be our romantic interests.

7. The strictness at home kept us distanced from our parents and closer to our friends..

Something, which again was frowned upon and usually, not liked. We used to stealthily pick up their phones and talk to our friends until dawn-break to vent our family woes.

8. And how can we miss the feel of a fearful heart that thumped bloody murder every time we got our report cards signed by our parents

9. From parties to watching movies, everything used to be off limits

10.  Our daydreams usually comprised of thoughts about how to leave it all someday to a strange land that has no rules, no judgements, only freedom

But the mere realization that it required money to travel to such places, depressed us all over again.

11. We all busted our butts to get through our 12th boards with flying colours so we could get admission in best of colleges outside of our native city, and…

12.  …It was not until our parents dropped us off at the gate of a new life, that we realized how much we are going to miss home

Seeing them leave makes us cry hard. It almost feels like it is pieces of our heart (which they really are) walking away from us.

13. Today, thanks to those flying chappals and cold taunts, we have turned into responsible and independent individuals

14. And the angst we once held against our parents has turned into immense respect

14. It does not matter what kind of relationship we shared with them then or have now, we feel lucky to have such amazing parents who…

….right from the dawn till the time they go to bed, think and pray for nothing but our best.

Love you Maa & Papa 🙂
