It will be a grave injustice if we categorise the Gorakhpur tragedy as just another piece of news that has made us cringe and sigh. While there are several media houses that will run several stories with even more angles (read the litmus test of patriotism), nothing takes away from the fact that 63 people died in a hospital because they couldn’t arrange oxygen for the patients!
While the entire world is mourning, public figures have taken to Twitter to express their angst against the unimaginable plight.

8. How callous can one be?
30 children died in UP's Gorakhpur. Initial reports: oxygen supply was cut off because the hospital had not paid its bill. SHOCKING!

No one should be allowed to use the words "unfortunate" and "tragedy" in relation to #Gorakhpur. This was murder.

9. Virender Sehwag’s heart goes out!
Deeply pained by the loss of innocent lives in #Gorakhpur . More than 50000 children have lost their lives here since encephalitis was 1/2

first reported in 1978, the year I was born. We Still haven't figured a way to save innocent lives from a known disease. Heartbreaking !

10. It is not just a tragedy!
Not a tragedy. Not an accident. Not a calamity. Not floods, riots, rain or even disease. Murderous, Callous negligence #gorakhpur https://t.co/hE2dwspusz

These are only a few from the sea of reactions that have surfaced on social media as the sense of numbness prevails. Our heart goes out to all the families who have lost loved ones. May they all rest in peace.
