Britannia Marie Gold’s Startup Contest For Homemakers: ₹10 Lakh Funding, 10,000 Ideas To Get Certified Training From ‘Skill India’

If you have a family member who is also a homemaker, never miss an opportunity to watch them work. You’d be surprised at how much they can achieve at a very short span of time! For example, I have grown up watching my grandmother cook breakfast, iron clothes, and feed her school-bound grandchildren all at the same time! Sometimes I wondered how great an entrepreneur she would have been with her multitasking, quick decision-making, and money-handling abilities.

It’s not like Indian homemakers lack the passion and enthusiasm to create something of their own. But the lack of encouragement, confidence, and financial support is what confined their abilities within the four walls of their homes. Which is why immense entrepreneurial spirit remains untapped in India.

However, Britannia Marie Gold recognised this problem and began their ‘My Startup Contest’ to encourage and push promising homemakers to build something of their own. Homemakers with brilliant business ideas will be supported by the brand with Rs 10 lakhs each to kick start their entrepreneurship ventures.

Their first season, which was held last year, saw many talented and capable housewives who were hopeful about starting their own business. Vijayeeni Sahoo, a 36-year-old homemaker from Bhubaneshwar and one of the winners of the contest, started her own tailoring boutique with the prize money. Not just that, she encouraged other women to join her venture, trained them in stitching and tailoring, and empowered them to become financially independent as well!

Similarly, 35-year-old Lalita Patil opened her own restaurant in Mumbai with the prize money. She cooks home-style food or ghar ka khana for people who stay away from their homes. She now plans to open branches for her restaurant to give people a slice of ‘home’.

And now, the ‘My Startup Contest’ is back with its second season! Just like last year, promising homemakers will be given Rs 10 lakhs each to start their own businesses. In addition to that, the brand has partnered with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to train 10,000 homemakers in entrepreneurial abilities under the Skill India campaign by the Govt. of India. This is to ensure that prospective hometrepreneurs are armed with business knowledge that is crucial in deciding the fate of their ventures.
