Bride’s Plan Of Using 100 Live Goldfish As Table Centerpieces Backfires, Bestie Forced To Take Them Home

Brides-to-be in western countries accord the titles of ‘maid of honour’ and ‘bridesmaid’ to their nearest and dearest. In India, the bride’s sisters, cousins (read: dulhe ki saaliyan) and closest friends hold this position, albeit unofficially. Title or not, the designation comes with great power and great responsibility!

One maid of honour learnt the hard way when her bestie (the bride) insisted on using live goldfish placed in glass bowls as table centrepieces. Her plan also included the guests taking them home as wedding favours after the ceremony.

The maid of honour had major reservations which were eventually proved right. She explains in a viral Reddit thread,

“She was especially fond of fish. With that in mind, how cute would it be to have a pair of goldfish in a globe as a centerpiece? Real, live goldfish – a pair of them (to represent the couple, see?) – on each and every table, all 40 of them… Oh, the guests can take them home! They’d be like wedding favors! Keepsakes!”

The bride bought 100 goldfish for the occasion and put the maid of honour in charge of them. But none of the guests wanted to ‘adopt’ pets and the couple left for their honeymoon when the nuptials ended. The maid of honour was left with all the fish (or those that were still alive), so she took the remaining creatures home. Sadly, all but one died within a week.

Redditors were shocked at the bridezilla’s crazy idea and lauded the maid of honour for making the best of a terrible situation.

Wondering what happened to the lone surviving goldfish? She named that last one ‘Sun’ and it was her pet for 5 years. She claims it lived longer than their friendship and her ex-bestie’s marriage!
