The Netflix show Black Mirror has shaken us to the core. If you haven’t watched it, then you’re good. Because you’re still unaware of the dark side of technology we are heading into. But those who have seen the show know and believe that all of it is possible. It won’t be long before our lives become dominated and controlled, even ruined by technology. One of the technologies of the social rating system is already becoming a reality in China.

In a shocking piece of news, an American billionaire, Sam Altman, is amongst a select few people who have paid a company $10,000 to kill him so that his brain can be downloaded to a computer.

Nectome is a start-up company that promises to download a person’s brain to a computer after their death. According to a report in Express, the company’s website claims to –

preserve your brain well enough to keep all its memories intact: from that great chapter of your favourite book to the feeling of cold winter air, baking an apple pie, or having dinner with your friends and family. We believe that within the current century it will be feasible to digitise this information and use it to recreate your consciousness.”
Dr Hannah Critchlow, a Cambridge neuroscientist said in 2015,

“If you had a computer that could make those 100 trillion circuit connections then that circuit is what makes us, us, and so, yes, it would be possible. People could probably live inside a machine. Potentially, I think it is definitely a possibility.”

Does this ring a bell? Cookie – human consciousness in a machine – White Christmas – Black Mirror – reality.

If this is indeed a reality, then I can’t even begin to imagine where we are headed. What sets us apart from machines today is our brain – the supercomputer. So turning our brain into a machine is definitely a sign that we’re headed towards an impending doom. Or if we look at the brighter side, we can go on living like they do in San Junipero – forever young, forever together.
