Boss Grants Paid Leave To Employee Who Ran Out Of Sick Days, Says, “Loyalty Goes Both Ways”

Not everyone works from nine to five because they love what they do. In fact, most of us stick to our jobs because we have to pay our bills, right? And when you have a family to support, leaving a job just because you aren’t satisfied isn’t even an option. Working parents especially have to burn the candle on both ends to make ends meet. Although most of the employers do provide leaves, what should one do if you have exhausted all your leaves and are faced with a family crisis? You may simply head to the office even if your kid is sick and needs you to be at home, because the risk of losing out on pay due to taking an unpaid leave isn’t an option for some parents.

But this employer is setting an example of how a little empathy towards their employees goes a long way to retain their employee’s loyalty. Bernie Reifkind, CEO of a recruiting firm shared through his LinkedIn post how ‘loyalty works both ways’, said sources. His epic response to a female employee (also a mother) working despite being worked up about her child’s health is what every employer needs to learn.

In his post, Bernie explained how the mother, sobbing at her desk at 7 in the morning couldn’t take leave as she was out of sick leaves. She was worried about losing any money that she could otherwise put to use. The kind-hearted Bernie sent her home to her child with a promise that she won’t lose any money. Additionally, he handed her a ‘check on the spot for extra money to alleviate her immediate financial worry.’

He further added that employers should reassure ‘your hard-working employees that their jobs are secure, whenever possible.’

Here’s the entire post:

“Silently she was sobbing at her desk, early at about 7:45 AM. I asked her if everything was OK? She told me that her child was sick and that she had been up all night. Bags under her eyes. I asked her “So, what are you doing here at the office?” She said that she had run out of “sick days” and could not afford to miss another day. I sent her home and promised that she would get paid. In addition, I wrote her a check on the spot for extra money to alleviate her immediate financial worry. She was incredibly grateful. To this day, she is my best employee not just because of her talent but her loyalty. Employers, please understand that most people are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Burning the candle at both ends. Trying to make ends meet. Kids, homework, spouses, significant others, elder parents, mortgage payments, auto repairs, etc. The relentlessness of life. People are worried about their jobs. PLEASE reassure your hard-working employees that their jobs are secure, whenever possible. Loyalty goes both ways.”

Bernie’s kind gesture towards her touched many online who wished that all the employers were this considerate towards their staff.

It is really difficult for a parent to take a day off work even for an emergency given the fear of getting fired or facing the prospect of financial instability due to losing out on pay. Bernie’s generosity and compassion towards the working mother just goes to show the extent of hard work and loyalty that a little kindness by our employers can bring out in us. Doesn’t it?
