Bold Bride From Bihar Cancels Wedding After Groom’s Family Make Dowry Demands

Dowries should ideally have no place in the 21st century. But it’s not so. Grooms and their families still partake in this shameless and outdated tradition. But human greed is hard to quench, and dowry is still a thriving culture, even though many of us are insulated from the news of its events.

It is particularly harsh on the bride’s family, especially if the marriage is arranged and the family is middle class – which is an overwhelming majority of the cases.

Most of the brides do not have a voice in the matter at all – a habit they probably will carry into the marriage.

But not this one. A bride from Harkhauli village in Gopalganj district, Bihar cancelled her marriage when the groom’s family made a demand of dowry in the form of hard cash.

Her bold move came close on the heels of CM Nitish Kumar appealing to Bihar citizens to discourage dowry.

 

The bride’s decision was applauded all across Bihar. Her father and the Bihar police appreciated the bride’s bold move.

“I am proud of my daughter. She has shown the greedy people the way.”

Although the Bihar police did not file a case against the groom’s family, Inspector Sarita Kumari had very kind words for the bride.

“The girl is a dowry in itself. The society will have to change its outlook about dowry.”

The onus lies with the bride to reject the dowry demand because in most cases the bride’s family will just bow down to the social pressure. We need more brides like this one.
