‘Marks Aren’t Everything,’ People Talk About Getting 60% In Class 12 & Still Excelling In Careers

A while back, an IAS officer shared his Class 12 mark sheet to show that marks don’t define your future. He scored 24 in Chemistry and still cracked the civil service examination. With various results being declared all across the country, this discussion is more important now than ever.

Yesterday, Reddit user Rishabh also shared his story of getting a ‘low’ percentage in boards and doing well in life despite it.

I got 62.5% in 12th standard from india

He further elaborated,

“The other day I was in the office and a few of us were discussing our 12th marks. Some of them had big names to boast. 92%, BITS Pilani campus, 97%, IITM, 94% IITM, and 95% NIT Durgapur, 93%, NITK. I said 62.5% and LOL college. There was a deafening silence for a very long few seconds. But you know what, I was the most comfortable person in the room. I had worked my way through the years and was happy at where my career was. At this point I feel I have distanced myself enough from that past and have made what I have done with my life now speak for itself and make my 12th marks a non issue. It doesn’t matter, not it ever will. Some people are born to do good in those exams, I unfortunately was none of those. And that is fine. I got my chance later and I made the most of what I had.”

Soon other people shared their success stories – a dentist who got 64%, a director of a company who got 54% in 12th but earns the same as an IIM alumnus and a CA who got 66%. Interestingly, there were also experiences where people scored in the 90s and felt that their marks didn’t do much for them in life.

Hence proved, marks aren’t the be-all and end-all of our lives.
