Bihar Railway Police Hire Local Tantrik ‘Ghoda Baba’ To Catch A Thief! *Slow Claps*

English philosopher Francis Bacon once said, “The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses”. And this is particularly true when it comes to a country like India. It is no surprise that we have an abundance of pre and post event rituals for everything from conception, birth, exams, weddings to death and often even after that. But as much as we may indulge our culture its little mystical quirks now and then, where do we draw the line?

We draw it when educated doctors in the 21st century rely on godmen to ward of evil from an ICU patients body. And we draw it when police officials turn to babas to help them catch the criminal.

The Government Railway Police in Bihar’s Siwan district are relying on a tantrik help them catch a thief.

According to NDTV, a case of theft was reported in the house of one Anil Kumar Srivastav in the railway colony of Siwan last week. The GRP, however, failed to make any breakthroughs in the case after inspection.

Believe it or not, their next move was to turn to a local tantrik called ‘Ghoda Baba’ to help them solve the case.

Much to Srivastav’s surprise, the in-charge of the GRP Police Station Nand Kishore, along with Ghoda Baba, visited his house for a second round of inspection.

This is how Ghoda Baba performed his ‘magic’:

The tantrik carefully inspected the site of the theft. After some, ahem, ‘careful deliberations’ the godman instructed Srivastav to perform some rituals at his house. These rituals if performed at night would ensure the capture of the thief, he claimed.

When none of the promised results was achieved and the thief did not miraculously plop into a jail cell, the tantrik made a second site visit. Again accompanied by some GRP personnel, the baba gave Srivastav further instructions. This time he was instructed to visit the tantric’s place in the nearby town of Mairwa to crack the case. As usual, at night.

Well, Srivastav had had enough of the magic show and wrote to senior police officials about the GRP’s mystical crime-solving approach. He wrote to the Muzaffarpur Superintendent of Police (Railway) Sanjay Kumar Singh, enquiring after the logic in engaging a tantrik in the age of scientific investigations to solve the case.

Are we moving forward or backwards in terms of having some sense? What hope can we keep in our crime and judicial system if it’s all going to come down to a few magic spells? If I’d known being a tantrik was such a highly sought-after profession, I’d have saved a lot of money spent on my education. Some abracadabra would’ve done the trick.
