No matter how old you get, birthdays will always be special. We each celebrate the day we were born in our own special ways. Some go all out with birthday weekends and grand parties. Some, on the other hand, would rather spend the day with a handful few who mean the world to them. Be what may, there is one constant practice that transcends these different approaches.
Whether you’re up for it or not, when thinking of birthdays, the first thing that comes to mind is a birthday cake with candles on it. Blowing out these candles while your friends and family belt out “Happy birthday to you…” is pretty much the ‘birthday moment’.
But one person seems to think it’s time to stop these practices. Amitabh Bachchan believes it’s time to question these angrezi traditions.
The veteran actor, tweeted out his opinion today and let’s just say, he has quite some questions:
T 2816 – अंग्रेज़ Happy Birthday की प्रथा छोड़ गए और हम अभी भी उसके ग़ुलाम हैं ! ये cake क्यूँ ? ये candle क्यूँ ? ये फूँक कर बुझाना क्यूँ ? हमारी सभ्यता में दीप प्रज्वलित करते हैं ; ये उसे फूँक कर बुझाने को कहते हैं ! और ये गाना क्यूँ ! ये गाइए : वर्ष नव, हर्ष नव …
— Amitabh Bachchan (@SrBachchan) May 24, 2018
His tweet roughly translates to:
“The English left the practice of Happy Birthday with us, and we are still slaves to it. Why do we cut a cake? Why these candles? Why this blowing out of candles? In our civilisation, we ignite the lamp and they tell us to blow it out! And why this song?! Sing this: Varsh nav, harsh nav…”
The 102 Not Out star says that Indians are still slaves to the English practice of ‘Happy Birthday’. He questions the use of cakes and the blowing out of candles and even the singing of the English birthday song.
Twitter couldn’t help scratching their heads at this sudden epiphany of the star. They had some hilarious reactions to it:

What do you think people? Time to say bye to this age-old practice that we’re apparently slaves to? I’m not giving up on cakes though. When else can a girl stuff her face with cake without getting worrisome looks? Nope, cakes are bae. They stay.
