Man Dupes Bengaluru Teen With Fake Instagram Profile, Extorts ₹6.4 Lakh For Nudes

Cyber crimes are on the rise in India. Apart from monetary frauds that involve tricking victims into revealing OTPs and card details, there are also several cases of cyberbullying and sexual harassment using fake online identities.

In December 2018, a 17-year-old Bengaluru student fell prey to such a situation. A man created a fake girl’s account on Instagram and befriended him.

According to The Times of India, after posing as a girl, the abuser started conversations of an intimate nature with the victim. Eventually, he persuaded him to send nude photos. Once he had them in his possession, he started blackmailing the victim with a different profile. He threatened to publicly share the images if he didn’t receive Rs.10 lakh.

The student resorted to stealing cash and jewellery from his family to meet the blackmailer’s demands.

In total, the blackmailer extorted Rs. 6.4 lakh (and silver items) in various instalments over a period of 2 months. Eventually, the victim’s father realised that things were missing and the student confessed everything. Officials at the Rajajinagar police station have said that the blackmailer has been identified and will soon be taken into custody.

If such a situation ever occurs with you or someone you know, the first step is to block the abuser on social media. In case things escalate, Instagram offers a way to report a violation or abuse. And lastly, a case can be filed with the police department.
