American author Barbara Kingsolver once said, “Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws”. This is probably the closest anyone has ever come to accurately describing the phenomenon that is motherhood. It is a form of inexplicable pure love like no other and we’ve all experienced its magic in one form or the other. It may have been from our own mothers, or it could have from our best friends mom or even a random individual who took care of us and made us feel safe.

For a newborn child from Bengaluru, when his own mother turned her back on him, maternal love came from the most unexpected of places.

A baby boy was found wrapped in plastic and abandoned near a construction site at Electronic City in Bangalore.

The child who was covered in blood when discovered, was probably just a few hours old, reports CNN.

According to BBC, the authorities received a call from a local shopkeeper who had spotted the baby. Assistant Sub-Inspector Nagesh R who was the first to arrive took the baby to a hospital nearby. After treatment, the infant was brought to the police station.

Seeing that the baby was very weak and barely stirring, a female police constable Archana, decided to breastfeed him.

Speaking to CNN, Nagesh said:

“She fed the baby for half an hour, and then the baby let out a big cry. The body was shaking – hands and legs. Everybody became so happy.”

Ms Archana is a mother to a three-month-old boy and had recently returned to work from her maternity leave.

Explaining what motivated her to do the act, she told BBC:

“I just couldn’t bear it. I felt like my child was crying and I had to feed the baby.”

NDTV reports that the baby has been named Kumaraswamy, after Karnataka’s new chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, as the child has been hailed by local residents as the ‘government’s baby’. He has since been handed over to Shishu Mandir, a children’s home in Bengaluru.

Nagesh, who developed a bond with the child says:

“I was so happy. We police officers work so hard, but the last two days in the station was something else. It felt like a baby was born in our home.”

Bengaluru City Police saluted Archana and her selfless action, praising her on their Facebook page.

We salute our COP Smt. Archana, Bengaluru City Police, for her kind motherhood affection of breastfeeding and rescuing…

This incident brings to light the selfless nature of motherhood and also the softer side of police officials. The female cop has displayed that maternal instincts are not limited to just your own offsprings. She has gone above and beyond her call of duty and possibly saved the life of a small helpless child in the process. Kudos to her for stepping up to the moment.
