Instead Of Money, Bengal Bride Asks For Books As ‘Mahr’ From Groom, Gets 80 Of Them!

The BEST gift one can give to anyone who loves to read is a book. A true book-lover can never have too many books and can never grow tired of reading.

Which is why, a 24-year-old woman named Moyna Khatun from Murshidabad, West Bengal, who was to get married rejected traditional ‘Mahr’ (‘Mohor’ in Bengali) or dowry from the groom’s side and asked for books instead, reports The Telegraph.

“She had no interest in traditional mohor, which can go up to Rs 50,000 these days. Initially shocked and awed by her parents’ request, Mizanur’s family happily accepted the demand,” said a family member, reports News18.

Moyna’s wedding took place on Monday and was it a sight to behind! Several cartons filled with books arrived at her place. There were 80 books in total and they comprised of those written by Rabindranath Tagore, Nazrul Islam, and Bibhutibhushan Bandhopadhyay.

“I have always been a bookworm since my childhood,” Moyna said.

Overjoyed by her unusual request, the groom’s family decided to give her an undisclosed amount of money for her personal expenses.

Taking notice of the incident, a government official said, “Moyna has set a great example. The government believes if a girl is imparted education, it will transmit to the next generations. Girls like Moyna can be used as a poster girl for this purpose.”

With her unusual demand, Moyna has set an example of how there is no greater wealth than knowledge!
