The famous 1966 Bollywood classic ‘Jhumka gira re, Bareilly ke bazaar mein‘ made a lot of people think (including me) that Bareilly is a place where you get special, out-of-the-world jhumkas. However, there hasn’t been any real connection between Bareily and jhumkas and several customers and tourists have been left disappointed, until now.
According to a report by India Today, Bareilly finally gets its jhumka – a 14-feet high installation at Parsakhera. It weighs over 200 kilograms, is embedded with colourful stones, and is decorated with Bareilly’s signature zari embroidery.
“We have people coming and asking for jhumkas and we do not have the heart to tell them the jhumkas in Bareilly are no different from those sold elsewhere. We always keep jhumkas in different designs because we do not want to disappoint our customers,” said a local jeweller.
Union Minister Santosh Gangwar said, “Visitors will finally be able to associate the landmark jhumka in Bareilly with the evergreen song.”
According to a report by News18, the total cost of the installation is Rs 18 lakh, of which 8 lakhs is for the jhumka alone.
People on the internet are thrilled that Bareilly has officially been linked with the evergreen Bollywood number.

Who would've thought! A Bollywood chartbuster has led to a tourist attraction that now serves as the 'identity' of the city.
