World’s 2nd Largest And 700-Year Old Banyan Tree In Telangana Is Put On Drip

We are all familiar with the drips of saline provided to us in hospitals in case of an illness. The process works as the much-needed boost putting in the required dose of medicine into our body. While this is an effective process in case of humans and animals, what do you do in case of a tree?

Well, you do the same. Yes, the state officials in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district have gone ahead and proven it.

In a quite miraculous incident, 700-year-old Banyan tree was given a new life with the help of a drip in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district.

The tree that goes by the name of “Pillalamarri” or “Peerla Marri”, is a major tourist attraction in the state of Telangana spreading over 3 acres of land. It is also believed to the world’s second largest Banyan tree.

However, the tree was going through a feeble health condition with one of its branches severely infected by termites.

It was closed for the tourists to visit since last December after a branch came crashing down due to the withering caused by the termites.

On seeing the poor condition of the tree, the state officials came together to the rescue as they put up drips filled with diluted pesticides to wipe out the insects. Speaking about the same to TOI, Mahabubnagar District Forest Officer, Chukka Ganga Reddy said,

“We diluted the Chlorpyrifos chemical and started pushing it into the stem by keeping holes, but it didn’t work out. The solution was coming back instantly. Later we started injecting solution like a saline drip. This process has been effective. Secondly, we are watering the roots with the diluted solution to kill the termites. And in a physical method, we are building concrete structures to support the collapsing heavy branches.”

The bottles had diluted chemical Chlorpyrifos in them and were placed at every two meters of the giant banyan tree and worked incredibly well in slaying those deadly insects.

For a news to be happy about, the tree has improved a lot and is in stable condition now. Commenting on the health of the tree, another official added,

“The tree’s health is stable now. We are hoping it will become normal after a few days. We are also planning to open the site to the public after discussion with the higher officials, but this time people have to see it from a distance away from the barricades.”
