When it comes to fashion, designers are always pushing the envelope. They experiment with themes, fabrics etc to create pieces we’ve never seen before. Be it apparel or accessories, we’ve seen some pretty unique stuff this past year. First, Viktor & Rolf made a splash with their meme-couture and then French label Jacquemus created the world’s tiniest handbags.
At the Central Saint Martins BA Fashion Show 2019 in London last week, Norwegian designer Fredrik Tjaerandsen captured the limelight with his latest creation – Balloon dresses!
The craziest thing you'll see today: A fashion show where balloons become dresses! Watch the video and tell us what you think of it. Yay or nay? pic.twitter.com/o3Vl4jhubP

Models walked the runway wearing giant balloons that deflated into rubber dresses and everyone was hooked. The designer won himself the L’Oréal Professional Young Talent Award and soon enough the videos from the fashion show went viral on Twitter.
Here is another one of his cool outfits.
For those of you who are wondering how exactly these outfits work, the rubber is sourced from Sri Lanka. HuffPost quotes the designer revealing more details,
“I have constructed these pieces with an air pressure system that lets the wearer control the air-flow. Whenever the wearer wants to deflate they open a latch inside to release the inverted bubble part and then dives out of the deflating bubble. The garment within and the bubble is all in one piece and I designed it to have as few seams as possible.”
People couldn’t get enough of watching the dresses deflate and some even remarked that these would have been great on the Met Gala pink carpet.
So cool and totally weird at the same time!! Balloon dresses…… I think it will become a thing 🙂 https://t.co/sjq05wYcx9

Why were none of these delightfully weird, shapeshifting, inflatable balloon dresses at the #MetGala?! Très camp! https://t.co/ELCElMZR3u pic.twitter.com/QpcfqPEbDF

WOW!!! Now that's something you don't see everyday. Interesting…thinking outside the box. Or better yet, "THE BALOON" 😁😁😁

However, others believed they were impractical and unattractive as far as fashion goes.
I will pay Twitter money to stop showing me those stupid balloon dresses.

WTH is the point of this? It looks dumb and what is the material, more pollutants or is it recycled rubber or biodegradable? Otherwise it’s not innovative.

Wearable or not, these dresses sure as hell push the boundaries of fashion and we can’t contain our excitement for Fredrik’s next collection.
