Classrooms hold innumerable memories for us. We saw all kinds of people – but the most intriguing ones of the lot were the back benchers. Everyone would wonder what these last bench kids did, and why the teachers were always suspicious of them. Being a back bencher myself, I think it’s because they couldn’t handle the awesomeness that we, the last benchers, brought to the class.
The following points will resonate with all the former members of the Back Bencher’s Club.
1. You instinctively went to the back, even if the front seats were empty
2. All the teachers collectively thought you were the naughty ones of the lot
They inevitably blamed you and your group for all the mischief.
3. You would secretly listen to music at the back
…whilst covering your head with a cardigan or sweater.
4. You were considered very cool by the people in class
Obviously, because, back benches.
5. You occupied the last seat even in the school bus
Because that’s where all the masti happened.
6. Cheating during exams was an adventure
And the supervisors always suspected the last benches, so it was tricky. But twice the fun.
7. You would almost always work on another subject’s homework during a class
Mostly because it was due in the next class.
8. You could shamelessly fall asleep because the teacher couldn’t see you
Thanks to all the other students in the front.
9. When a teacher asked you to sit on the first bench for the lecture, you felt remorseful
It was like leaving home and going to an entirely unknown place.
10. The back bench area was your territory, and not everyone was allowed there
Just you, and your gang.
11. Teachers would ask you and your friends for answers because they thought you weren’t attentive in class
And when you gave the answer right, you would feel proud.
12. You never underestimated the freedom the back benches gave you..
..as opposed to any other place in class
13. You had the liberty to eat during the class
14. You could get away with obvious mischief as the teacher would take time to come to the last bench
And your friends would help you cover it up.
15. The unity that the back-benchers had was stronger than any other bond
Because you trusted not to get each other in trouble.
16. Because ultimately, you never chose the back bench, the back bench chose you
It’s like you were meant to be.
“The best brains of the nation may be found on the last benches of the classroom.” ~Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
