‘Baba Ka Dhaba’ Owner Files Complaint Against YouTuber For Allegedly Misappropriating Donations

A few days back, customers swarmed ‘Baba Ka Dhaba‘ eatery in Delhi after a video of an elderly couple struggling went viral. In fact, people on social media came together to provide aid to the 80-year-old couple who made headlines as they shared their hopeful journey with the world.

Recently, Kanta Prasad, who runs the famous eatery, filed a complaint against YouTuber Gaurav Wasan for allegedly misappropriating funds that were raised to help him and his wife Badami Devi, reports NDTV. Incidentally, it was Wasan who had shot the widely shared video of the teary-eyed couple talking about the lack of customers, following which several people came to their rescue.

In his complaint at Malviya Nagar police station, the elderly man said that Gaurav had asked the public on social media to donate money to the couple in his now-viral video. However, he alleged that Gaurav “intentionally and deliberately shared only his and his family/friends bank details and mobile numbers with the donors and collected huge amounts of donation through different modes of payments i.e bank account/wallets without providing any information to the complainant.”

He also accused the YouTuber of not providing details of the financial transactions with him. He further said he had only received a cheque of Rs 2 lakh from Gaurav. He was quoted saying by The Indian Express,

“I don’t get a lot of customers now; most people come here to take selfies… Earlier I was earning over Rs 10,000 per day, now it’s Rs 3,000-Rs 5,000.”

However, Gaurav denied the allegations. He said he has transferred all the money into the popular eatery owner’s account, “When I shot the video, I didn’t know it would become this big. I didn’t want people to harass Baba (Prasad) so I shared my bank details.” He even shared receipts of the transactions, all dated October 27 — two cheques of Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 2,33,000 and another of Rs 45,000.

He mentioned this was the total amount he had collected in the three days. Some YouTubers even alleged that Gaurav had actually received Rs 20-25 lakh, however, he denied the allegations. DCP (South) Atul Kumar Thakur was quoted saying, “We received the complaint yesterday and are enquiring into it.” However, no FIR has been registered in the case.

Well, we hope the elderly couple receives the amount collected for them. What do you think about the incident? Tell us in the comments below.
