Ayushmann Khurrana Explains Why Imposing Hindi All Over India Doesn’t Make Sense

In my 20 something years of existence, I have seen a lot of battles. Battles over boundaries, battles over tributaries et all but the battle that baffles me the most (not that it can be categorised) is the one that has swept the nation into a whirlwind of hate and bigotry- language.

keeping the politics of caste and creed aside, the blame game over Hindi imposition (on regional languages) in Southern and Eastern India has given birth to a lot of uproars on social media and diversity has, unfortunately, taken a back seat. While trends like #StopHindiChauvinism have been trending on Twitter, the opinions have divided our nation into more than one part.

Just to give you a context, this is what it looked like.

Now, actor-singer Ayushmann Khurrana has contributed to the dialogue and we cannot help but nod.

In a celebrity column, he writes, the thought came to him when he saw a sign in Tamil Nadu that read, ‘Pick Up Point’ in English and ‘Lene Ki Jagah’ in Hindi.

“This is what happens when you force Hindi on South India.”

Not ridiculing in any manner, Ayushmann further delved deep into the depths of this plight, describing how the ‘force’ is doing nothing to bind the country.

“How can we force Hindi on the south and north-east India? They hardly speak the language.”

He also took an opportunity to elaborate on the source of the Hindi-ness that touches non-Hindi speaking states. But he didn’t stop at that.

“Yes, Hindi cinema and songs have a wider reach and that’s the Wren and Martin of non-Hindi speakers, but the expectation from people residing in all parts of the country to alter their language of thought overnight would be a big mistake in a pluralistic nation like India.
Some people believe that the desire to be a global citizen makes us less patriotic. Well, it’s not true. This is what politics that abuses linguistic differences can do to us.”

The multi-talented star also spoke about the importance of English that overwrites linguistic barriers.

“We have a big nation. Let’s have a big heart by keeping our fragile egos at bay.”

Can we, please?
