The government has recently issued a notification which has sent shock waves amongst medics. Ayurveda doctors are now legally allowed to perform surgery. According to TOI, the Ayurveda doctors will be trained to perform varied surgeries including ENT (ear, nose, and throat), Ophthalmological (eyes), dental, orthopaedic, etc. The training shall be included during their post-graduation.
“Postgraduate courses in surgery, ENT and ophthalmology have been there in Ayurved since 20-25 years and we have always had surgical OPDs. No one had looked into the legality of what was happening for decades. So, after consultation with the ministry…it was decided to put it down in writing to make it clear that what is already being done is legal,” said the President of Central Council of Indian Medicine.
On the other hand, The Indian Medical Association slammed the CCIM for allowing its practitioners to perform general surgery, reports The Indian Express, saying they are empowering practitioners with “undeserving areas of practice”.
