Apple Fixes FaceTime Bug That Allowed People To Snoop On Others, Rewards Kid Who Discovered It

Most of us love to say that our lives are like an open book and we’re very transparent. But, for real though, apni privacy badi pyaari hai humko. That’s why when a bug in the FaceTime started allowing people to watch and listen to out without their consent, people started panicking.

After discovering that the FaceTime app had such a huge bug, people began tagging and tweeting to Apple to come up with a fix. And after a few days of delay, they did mend it with their latest software update.

According to The Verge, Apple is releasing the iOS 12.1.4 to fix the flaw in the Group FaceTime feature that allowed people to see and listen to anyone even before they received the call.

After the Group FaceTime bug was discovered, Apple’s first course of action was to disable the app altogether so that people couldn’t exploit the situation, even accidentally. But now, it has released the latest software update to remove the bug from the system.

While apologising to their customers last week, Apple told TechCrunch that they’ll be re-opening the Group FaceTime for the public very soon,

“We have fixed the Group FaceTime security bug on Apple’s servers and we will issue a software update to re-enable the feature for users next week. We sincerely apologize to our customers who were affected and all who were concerned about this security issue. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this process.”

The Verge also reports that the bug was originally reported to Apple by Michele Thompson, after her 14-YO son, Grant, saw that he could eavesdrop on anybody through FaceTime. That’s why he’ll be awarded.

Michelle told NBC News that she had applied to the bug bounty program (people are given monetary rewards for finding security flaws) as a developer to get Apple’s attention, but it didn’t work. And although 9to5Mac broke the story, Apple credited the discovery of the bug to Grant Thompson. That’s why they’ve decided to fund his tuition fee as a reward for finding out this major flaw in the system.

So, since abb khatra tal gaya hai, feel free to use FaceTime and talk with anyone you want. And in case you notice something fishy going on again, even after the update, just let Apple know as quickly as you can.
