How A Small-Town Boy Became An Entrepreneur With A Little Encouragement From APJ Abdul Kalam

Many a time we take a step back from chasing our dreams thinking about the odds of achieving it. There are life goals which seem impossible and we give up even before starting to work towards it. However, one man’s recent post on LinkedIn proves that the odds are never too high.

Back in 2004, Ramsri Goutham Golla was a small-town boy living in Wanaparthy, Telangana. One day, he wrote a letter to India’s then-president, APJ Abdul Kalam. He was in class-6 at the time. The letter contained some of the best poems Ramsri had written. He didn’t know the correct address to post the letter, but he knew that the President resides in Rashtrapati Bhavan. So he posted the letter addressing “Abdul Kalam, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Delhi”.

The chances of his letter reaching APJ Abdul Kalam, let alone President writing him in response, were slim. He was just a boy who had written a letter to the President – one of the busiest persons in the country! When he told his friends, they thought he was joking!

And then, the unlikely happened – Ramsri received a letter in response from Abdul Kalam!

In a brief letter, Abdul Kalam thanked him for his letter and encouraged him to study well and excel in life.

“Thank you for your letter and the attached poems. Study well and excel,” the letter read.

It is indeed praiseworthy of the late former-president to take out the time and reply to Ramsri’s letter. As fate would have it, he did go on to achieve great heights!

Ramsri went on to become a Data Scientist and an entrepreneur. He started his own venture-backed startup at 27, driving a Porsche to work every day. He also flew his dad in Business-Class to the U.S. and back to India. While it was his hard-work that drove him to success, we can’t help but give some credit to APJ Abdul Kalam’s words and the entire incident which proves that the odds are never too high.

“If a weak small-town kid with a modest background could do it without any mentor in life, I bet the odds are much better for most of you,” Ramsri writes.
